The book compares Chris to the writer of the book Jon Krakauer in many ways. First of all, when Krakauer was a kid, he had problems with his parents such as they, mostly his dad, were pushing him hard into the medical field even though that was the last thing on his list at the time. The other problem with his dad was that his dad never believed in him especially when it came to climbing Devil's Thumb. Also, both Chris and Krakauer both actually go into the woods to get away from society and find peace while proving that they can make it on their own. Krakauer's journey involved going to Alaska and trying to climb Devil's Thumb to go out and try to do something new and exciting just like Chris, but Jon was much more prepared and because of that he made it out with his life.
